Frequently Asked Questions
-
You do not need to be in crisis to begin therapy.
Many people come because something no longer feels right in their lives. You may feel anxious, emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected, burned out, stuck in repeating patterns, or simply aware that you cannot continue living in the same way.
Often, people begin therapy not because they have clear answers, but because they have reached a point where something needs attention.
-
The first session is an opportunity for us to meet, talk about what is bringing you to therapy, and get a sense of whether working together feels right.
There is no pressure to share everything immediately or explain yourself perfectly.
We will talk about what has been happening in your life, what you hope therapy might help with, and any questions or concerns you may have about the process.
The initial session is also a chance for you to experience how I work and decide whether you feel comfortable continuing.
-
I work with adults experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including:
anxiety and overwhelm
burnout and stress
relationship difficulties
grief and loss
emotional disconnection
low self-worth and shame
life transitions and identity questions
loneliness and isolation
recurring emotional or relational patterns
questions of meaning, purpose, and direction
I also work with people who simply feel stuck, lost, or disconnected from themselves, even when life appears functional from the outside.
-
Confidentiality is a central part of therapy and something I take very seriously.
What you share in therapy will remain confidential except in rare situations where there is a serious risk of harm or a legal obligation requiring disclosure. I will always explain the limits of confidentiality clearly before therapy begins.
-
No.
I work in a trauma-informed way, which means there is no pressure to relive painful experiences or disclose more than feels manageable.
Therapy moves at a pace that feels safe and respectful.
Sometimes difficult memories or emotions naturally emerge as part of the work, but you will not be forced into revisiting experiences before you are ready.
-
This is extremely common, especially for men and for people who are used to managing things alone.
Therapy is not about being forced to open up quickly or say things before you are ready.
Part of the work is creating a space where you can gradually begin to understand and express your experience in a way that feels manageable and honest.
You do not need the right words before beginning.

I work with adults (18+) experiencing anxiety, depression, burnout, grief, life transitions, relationship difficulties, questions of identity and purpose, and the effects of past trauma or difficult childhood experiences. I work across a wide spectrum — from those navigating a specific life event to those seeking longer-term exploration of deeper patterns.
I am not a crisis service and cannot provide emergency mental health support. If you are in immediate distress, please contact the Samaritans on 116 123, text SHOUT to 85258, or call 999 / go to your nearest A&E. If you are unsure whether therapy is right for your situation, please get in touch — I am happy to have a brief conversation to help you think it through.
-
Not at all. I work with people of all backgrounds, beliefs, and none. My own background includes the Christian contemplative tradition, and I am comfortable with clients for whom questions of meaning, faith, or the inner life are part of their experience. But this is not a requirement, and I will never impose a worldview or framework on our work. You are welcome exactly as you are.
-
Yes. A significant part of my work is with men in their 20s, 30s, midlife, and post-retirement.
Many of the men I work with are thoughtful, capable, and used to carrying things on their own. Some struggle with anxiety, burnout, anger, emotional disconnection, or relationship difficulties. Others come with a quieter sense that something in life no longer fits.
You do not need to be “good at talking about feelings” to begin therapy.
We start wherever you are.
-
Yes, actively and with commitment. I am dedicated to working in an LGBTQ+-affirming way, and to holding space for questions of gender identity, sexual orientation, and relationship structure with openness and care. I also welcome neurodivergent clients — including those who identify as autistic or ADHD — and am willing to adapt how we work together to suit different communication styles and processing needs.
-
This depends on what you are looking for help with.
Some people come for shorter-term work focused on a specific issue such as anxiety, stress, or a recent life event. Others choose longer-term therapy to explore deeper emotional patterns, relationships, identity, or recurring difficulties.
I usually suggest beginning with six sessions before reviewing how the work feels and deciding together what may be most helpful moving forward.
